Deep-rooted racial discrimination in Sri Lankan criminal justice system

At the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention presented its country visit report on Sri Lanka. IMADR welcomed the Working Group’s thorough assessment on the enjoyment of the right to liberty and security in Sri Lanka and recommendations to the Government. On this occasion, IMADR submitted a written statement with a focus on racial discrimination in the Sri Lankan criminal justice system including the application of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). More >>

India must ensure freedom from caste discrimination in access to water and sanitation

The Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation presented his country visit report on India at the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council. At the presentation of his report, IMADR delivered a joint statement to highlight the issue of the lack of access to safe sanitation facilities for Dalit women and the culture of impunity for caste-based violence against them. The joint statement also raised concerns on the continuing practice of manual scavenging in spite of the adoption of the 2013 Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act. More >>

UN expert body addressed racial discrimination in Japan

In August, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) considered the Japanese government’s implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). The Japan NGO Network for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ERD Net) submitted a joint civil society report to the Committee. The Committee issued the concluding observations at the end of its 96th session. More >>

UN must protect human rights defenders in fight against racial discrimination                After recently engaging with the UN to combat racial discrimination, human rights defenders from Sweden, Hong Kong and Japan faced online hate speech. IMADR urged the Human Rights Council to protect the defenders in order to realise the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA). More >>

Human rights violations against minority Rohingya in Myanmar                                       At the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar presented its findings. IMADR called for the establishment of an international, impartial and independent mechanism on international crimes including crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. More >>
