Japan: Joint NGO report to CEDAW on multiple forms of discrimination
For the adoption of a list of issues prior to reporting for Japan by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) during the 77th Pre-Sessional Working Group (2 – 6 March 2020), IMADR and its partner NGOs submitted a joint NGO report on multiple forms of discrimination against women in Japan on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, descent, nationality and/or disabilities. !!! Due to the situation concerning COVID-19, treaty bodies sessions are postponed until the end of May, including the 101st session of CERD. At its 101st session from 20th April to 8th May 2020, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) will consider the situation of racial discrimination in following six countries. UN: CERD adopted concluding observations on Cambodia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel and Uzbekistan
On the 13th of December, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) concluded its 100th session. At the session, CERD adopted concluding observations on Cambodia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel and Uzbekistan. *Recommendations with asterisks [*] are one-year follow-up recommendations. To celebrate the 100th session, the Committee convened a special meeting where IMADR delivered a joint NGO statement. The Committee also adopted guidelines on reprisals against human rights defenders. IMADR submission to UN Special Rapporteur on racism – Role of bots in racist hate speech
In response to the call for submissions for her next thematic report on new information technologies, racial equality, and non-discrimination, IMADR submitted the information to the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, Ms. E. In the lead up to the UN General Assembly’s review of the human rights treaty body system in 2020, civil society organisations from different parts of the world made joint proposals to strengthen the system. The proposals illustrate a model of the reporting procedures with the introduction of a fixed calender which are accessible to rights holders, responsive to victims of human rights violations, and ensure that all governments uphold their treaty obligations.
