PRESS RELEASE: Japan has enacted the act to promote the elimination of Buraku discrimination
The International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism, or IMADR, welcomes the enactment of the Act on the Promotion of the Elimination of Buraku Discrimination on December 9, 2016. It is important to note that the Act recognizes the still existing Buraku discrimination in today’s Japan and declares the unacceptableness of Buraku discrimination that impedes the enjoyment of fundamental human rights. It is also important that the Act clarifies responsibilities of the state as well as local public corporations in eliminating Buraku discrimination through the provision of advice and support in regard to Buraku discrimination in the consolidated mechanism and the promotion of appropriate education and awareness-raising. UN: Global civil society joins hands with CERD to end racial discrimination
On 23 November 2016, civil society from all over the world, including indigenous and minority groups, met with the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). UN: Joint call to strengthen follow-up of recommendations to fight racism
Together with Minority Rights Group International (MRG) and Race and Equality, IMADR presented a joint response for the consultation of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) with civil society “Joining hands to end racial discrimination” on 23rd November 2016. Farewell to Rodolfo Stavenhagen
Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen, one of IMADR board members, passed away on November 5, 2016 in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He was 84 years old. As a sociologist, researcher and human rights defender, Rodolfo dedicated his life to the realization of human rights of indigenous peoples and minorities in the world. UN: CERD invites civil society to join hands to end racial discrimination
The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) invites civil society organisations to attend its Consultation titled “Joining hands to end racial discrimination” during the 91st session on 23 November 2016 from 15:00 to 18:00 at the Palais des Nations, Conference Room XX. Sri Lanka: UN expert calls for establishment of Independent Commission on Minorities
UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues, Rita Izsák-Ndiaye, concluded her mission to Sri Lanka on 20th October 2016. Japan: Targeted attack on freedom of expression in Okinawa
Following the country visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on the freedom of opinion and expression to Japan in April this year , IMADR and All Okinawa Council for Human Rights released the joint report “Targeted attack on freedom of expression in Okinawa”. “More needs to be done”, message to Sri Lanka to heal wounds from enforced disappearances (20 September 2016)
