CERD 101st session (online): Bosnia and Herzegovina, Japan, Latvia, Mauritania, Mauritius, China, Honduras, Norway, Qatar and Saudi Arabia (August 2020)
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) will hold its 101st session online from 4th to 7th August 2020. Consideration of States parties’ reports is postponed to future sessions. During the 101st session, the Committee will consider the follow-up reports of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Japan, Latvia, Mauritania, Mauritius, China, Honduras, Norway, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The Committee will also consider information submitted under the Early Warning Urgent Action Procedures (EWUAP). In response to the call for submissions for her next General Assembly report on combatting glorification of Nazism: Rise of anti-Semitism and other forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance in times of COVID-19, IMADR submitted the information to the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, Ms. E. Tendayi Achiume. The submission focuses on the rise of nationalist and religious extremism in Sri Lanka in times of COVID-19 and discrimination against ethno-religious minorities, in particular Muslims. IMADR condemns the police killing of George Floyd and racial discrimination in the United States June 5, 2020 On the morning of May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a black man, was killed by a police officer on a street of Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the United States. According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Floyd was held by a police officer by the neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds as he was knocked to the ground and suffocated to death. In response to the increasing number of reports on incidents of racism and discrimination related to the COVID-19 pandemic, IMADR developed a database of national human rights institutions (NHRIs), equality bodies, NGOs and other bodies that can receive complaints on incidents of racism and discrimination. TB-Net Statement: COVID-19 pandemic and UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies
The NGO Network on UN Treaty Bodies (TB-Net), which IMADR is a founding member of, issued a joint statement concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and the UN human rights treaty bodies. The statement calls on the treaty body system to ensure that any measures taken against concerns posed by the pandemic guarantee the meaningful and flexible engagement with civil society. It particularly requests for the development of communications technologies like video-conference for the participation of civil society across all the treaty bodies.
