Sri Lankan civil society demands the participation of international community in transitional justice processes in the island

At the 30th session of the Human Rights Council, OHCHR investigation report into human rights violations in Sri Lanka was released. IMADR co-organised a panel discussion consisted of local civil society representatives from different ethnic and religious communities to share their responses to the report, and discuss steps to be taken in order to reach truth, justice, accountability and reconciliation in the country. More >>

UN documents sexual and gender-based violence by Boko Haram

OHCHR report on violations and abuses committed by Boko Haram revealed a series of human rights violations including killing and abduction of civilians, use of child soldiers, rape and other forms of sexual violence. The report concluded that those atrocities may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. At the presentation of the report in the Human Rights Council, IMADR highlighted the vulnerability and suffering of girls and women in affected countries, and demanded the protection of civilians and immediate measures specifically designed for girls and women. More >>

Nepal: Dalit rights in new Constitution   On 20th September, a new Constitution of Nepal came into force. Despite long-standing requests from Dalit communities, the new Constitution fails to include provisions to increase the political participation of Dalit people. With Feminist Dalit Organisation of Nepal (FEDO), IMADR brought the concern to the Human Rights Council. More >>

Freedom of Religion in Sri Lanka”, UN Human Rights Council event addressed unresolved questions in the island  

Together with Franciscans International, IMADR hosted a parallel event titled “Freedom of Religion in Sri Lanka” at the 28th session of the UN Human Rights Council. The speakers for the event included Mr. Heiner Bielefeldt, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Mr. Ruki Fernando, a Sri Lankan human rights defender, and Mr. Mohamed Nizam Kariapper, a mayor from East Sri Lanka and the Deputy Secretary General of the Sri Lankan Muslim Congress (SLMC) .
